Isiah Whitlock Jr., the acclaimed actor beloved by television and film audiences around the world, has died at the age of 71 after a short illness, his manager confirmed on social media.
Whitlock built a rich, decades-long career on stage and screen, earning special admiration for his role as Senator R. Clayton “Clay” Davis on HBO’s The Wire — a character whose flamboyant delivery and unforgettable catchphrase became a cultural touchstone.

Born in South Bend, Indiana, on September 13, 1954, Whitlock began his acting journey after a collegiate football injury led him to study theatre. He trained at the American Conservatory Theater and started appearing in television guest roles in the late 1980s, steadily building a diverse body of work.

While he will forever be associated with The Wire, Whitlock’s talents extended far beyond that role. Over his career he appeared in:
