A tragic accident has claimed the life of 18-year-old rodeo star Ace Patton Ashford from Lott, Texas. On August 12, while tending to a sick calf near Chilton, a nearby horse became spooked, causing Ashford’s leg to become entangled. He was dragged across an open field, sustaining severe head injuries. Despite being airlifted to Baylor Scott & White Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries that same morning.

Ashford was a rising star in the rodeo community, known for his dedication and skill in team roping. He had recently graduated from Rosebud-Lott High School and was set to join the Hill College Rodeo Team in the fall. His accomplishments included winning the 2023 Riata Buckle #10.5 Junior Championship and the 2024 Patriot #11.5 All-Ages Championship.

Described as humble and hardworking, Ashford was deeply admired by peers and mentors alike. National Finals Rodeo roper Cody Snow praised him as “about as pure as they get,” highlighting his respectful nature and dedication to the sport. Ashford’s passing has left a profound impact on the community.

A memorial scholarship fund has been established in his honor to support future rodeo athletes. Family, friends, and fellow rodeo enthusiasts continue to share heartfelt tributes, remembering him not only for his talent but also for his kind and generous spirit. The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the risks involved in working with animals, even for experienced riders.
